International watchdog Reporters Without Borders recently ranked Hong Kong at 70 out of 180 countries in press freedom rights and measures. Recent years have seen the deterioration of working conditions for Hong Kong’s journalists, as well as the closure of several major media outlets due to funding issues. More than ten years earlier, Hong Kong had ranked among the top 20 spots for press freedom. So what went wrong?
